Discover the striking presence of this hand-carved pounamu Hei Tiki, crafted from rich, dual-toned stone collected near Nelson, New Zealand.

Its deep black streaks cut through a misty golden green, echoing the piercing flight of the kārearea through early morning fog — fierce, silent, and sacred.

Named Kohu Kārearea, this tiki embodies both vision and veiled mystery.
The kārearea, one of Aotearoa’s most powerful native birds, is known as a guardian of the high places — a protector, hunter, and spiritual sentinel.

Just as the mist (kohu) obscures what lies ahead, this piece speaks to the unknown ,urging trust in intuition, tipuna guidance, and the strength within when navigating life’s unseen terrain.

Birds like the kārearea were often seen as symbols of tipuna, messengers between the realms of the living and the spiritual world, or even guides to those navigating the natural world.

I absolutely loved carving this Hei Tiki, I was tempted not to sell it.
I don’t use any stencils so this was done completely freehand.

-(I can add an extra hole on the head if you’re interested)-
