Manaia Āwatea – Guardian of the Changing Sky
Carved from Nelson blue pounamu, this Manaia carries the stillness of deep waters and the ever-shifting tones of the sky. A taonga that speaks of transformation and quiet strength, its swirling blue-green hues reflect the mana of Te Tauihu — a region where mist, sea, and mountain meet.
Traditionally seen as a kaitiaki between the physical and spiritual worlds, the Manaia offers protection, balance, and inner guidance. Its curved form, pierced with light, evokes movement and openness — an energy of both protection and invitation. The paua shell inlays add a glint of life, echoing the flash of wings and ocean light.
Manaia means "containing mana" — spiritual authority, power, and presence. With the head of a bird, the body of a man, and the tail of a fish, it spans the realms of sky, land, and sea.
One of a kind, Nelson blue pounamu.
Stone gathered from Te Tauihu.
This piece is carved to follow the natural lines and colours of the stone, revealing both softness and strength.
